The instructor had been going over the energy diagram on page EM-34. A student questions what should go in the circle beneath the hand; he thinks it should both increase and decrease. Two other students respond and support that idea but think the increase is greater so that is what they are focusing on.

Group 1 discusses SQ #1, CQ 5-1 on page EM-35. They choose D: both the diagram and written narrative are wrong because the energy should always go from hot to cold. Veronica and Lauren talk about the instructor saying the energy always goes from the hot to the cold, but Jessica doesn't remember him saying that.
