UFM L1 Video Clip 2: Class responds to CQ 1-1
The instructor asks students to justify their choice for CQ 1-1. A student justifies D and then another student chooses C (saying that after the finger leaves the cart still has energy but not force). Then Mikayla from Group 1 argues for D (the hand gave the cart force and after touching that amount of force is still carried by the cart).
UFM L1 Video Clip 3: Group discusses CQ 1-2
Group 1 discusses CQ 1-2. At first they think it's either A or B but Vanessa says it can't be B because the graphs can't be the same. Mikayla argues for consistency from previous answer and thinks it's C as does Vanessa.
UFM L1 Video Clip 4: Class discusses CQ 1-2
About 75% of the class chooses A and 25% C in response to CQ 1-2. The instructor asks the class to justify their responses for either A or C. Vanessa from Group 1 justifies C. Another student explains her choice of A.
UFM L1 Video Clip 5: Group 1 discusses CQ 1-3
Group 1 discusses CQ 1-3. At first they think Victor (B) and not Samantha (A). Mikayla argues for Victor but Megan is not so sure. Mikayla explicitly says: "you need a force to make things move all the time… It could stop going because there is no more force on it but it keeps going (so there must be a force on it)." Megan questions that. Jessica then acknowledges that the man's force no longer acts on it but instead it has its 'own force' and that the forces acting on it are gravity and friction. Megan continues to be unhappy with Victor. Finally Jessica brings up energy (the cart continues with energy) and says she now thinks Megan is right and it's Amara (C).
UFM L1 Video Clip 6: Class discusses CQ 1-3
The instructor calls on students to share their reasoning for the various responses to CQ 1-3. The first student supports Amara (C) suggesting that if there were still a force on it then its speed would be changing. The second student also supports Amara and she provides slightly different reasoning. The third student chose Victor (B). She cites a pendulum as an example. [It keeps swinging even after you finish your push.]. The fourth student (Mikayla) argues for Victor. The fifth student chooses Amara (C) and cites Newton's First Law.
UFM L1 Video Clip 7: Class discusses CQ 1-4
The instructor asks students in the class to explain their reasoning for their responses to CQ 1-4. The first three students support choice A—that only energy is transferred. The first student mentions that force causes energy to be transferred. The second student explains the connection between force and energy using the 'paint and slap' analogy that the instructor had previously mentioned. The third student further supports A.
