UCR L2 Video Clip 2: Group discusses CQ 2-1 Part 1
Group discusses SQ #1 (CQ 2-1) about whether a rusted iron nail has more or less or the same mass as the unrusted nail. They have a long and interesting discussion. We have divided the discussion into 8 separate video clips. This is Part 1 of the discussion. Danielle and Gaby argue for 'more mass' while San and Hannah argue for 'same mass.' Gabby refers to the steel wool experiment where the mass stayed the same because the oxygen was included in the measurements both after and before the steel wool rusted.
UCR L2 Video Clip 3: Group discusses CQ 2-1 Part 2
Part 2 of CQ 2-1 discussion. Hannah proposes two ways to think about the situation that she claims supports the mass remaining the same. Her first argument focuses on a 'give and take' where mass is added and lost so the total remains the same. Then she talks about weighing the iron nail in air so the air is actually taken into account in the initial measurement.
UCR L2 Video Clip 7: Group discusses CQ 2-1 Part 6
Part 6 of CQ 2-1 discussion. The group continues their discussion; now talking about the difference between closed and open systems. Their issue seems to be whether the oxygen in the air is included in the initial measurement before rusting begins.
UCR L2 Video Clip 8: Group discusses CQ 2-1 Part 7
Part 7 of CQ 2-1 discussion. [After their discussion the instructor asks them to summarize their reasoning for the two answers: same mass and more mass.] Sam summarizes her thinking about why the mass remains the same. Hannah provides additional support for that answer. Danielle then argues for choice B; that the mass increases when rusting.
