UM L6 Video Clip 1: Students in class discuss their answers to CQ 6-2
The instructor calls on some students to discuss their responses to CQ 6-2 (should they worry if one of the magnets under the train has cracked). Several students argue that they would not worry because they had previously observed that when a magnet (or magnetized nail) is cut in pieces, each piece is still magnetized. However, one student does express a concern.
UM L6 Video Clip 2: Students in class discusses their answers to CQ 6-3
The instructor calls on some students to discuss their answer to CQ 6-3 (should they worry if a fire had broken out on the track about 50 miles ahead of the train, but they fire was put out). Two students respond that they would worry because they had observed previously that a magnetized nail became demagnetized when heated and the same thing would happen to the magnets on the track where there was a fire. Another student said that they'd need the answer to two questions before they could decide whether to worry or not. (1) Does permanent magnet behave the same as a temporary magnet when heated? (2) How quickly could the train stop? [They have 10 minutes.]
