The group works on drawing model diagrams for what happens when the – charged balloon picks up pieces of aluminum (metal). They occasionally refer to the model description handout to help them in their drawings.
The group then works on drawing their diagram for when the charged balloon picks up the pieces of paper. They discuss what happens as they draw their diagrams. There is some confusion about the difference between the aluminum (metal) and paper (non-metal) and the group clarifies it.
The group answers the first making sense question on the top of page SE-37: 'Explain what happened to the +/– entities in the aluminum piece when the negatively (–) charged balloon was brought close.'
The group answers the second making sense question on page SE-37: 'How does the arrangement of +/– in the aluminum piece explain why it's attracted to the balloon?' They recognize that the distance between the charges matters.
