Students are discussing as a whole class their responses to CQ 1-1: Of the following possibilities choose the one you feel is most important that children learn in science classes: A. Skills for conducting scientific research like conducting careful observations; B. Scientific facts and vocabulary; C. Science knowledge that will help students understand current events such as information about nuclear power plants and genetic modifications; D. An understanding of how new science knowledge is developed; or E. That science is fun. Students who speak selected C and E and A. All students who spoke expressed some reservation about their own response or suggested that their selection was based on the one response that made the other learning goals possible.
TL L1 Video Clip 2: Group discusses instruction of the three classroom teachers
Students are in small groups working on Part 2 of Lesson 1. They are discussing the instruction of the three teachers that is summarized in the table and whether or not each teacher engaged her students in any of the NGSS science and engineering practices. The students describe Ms. Rouge as engaging students in asking questions; carrying out investigations; and analyzing data. They describe Ms. Naranja as engaging her students in none of the practices and Ms. Celeste as engaging her students in all of the practices.

Students are discussing as a whole class Ms. Celeste's (hypothetical elementary school teacher) instruction. The students describe Ms. Celeste as having engaged in multiple science and engineering practices. They then describe how she had her students come up with a model and "rule" to describe the magnetic interactions.
