TL L5 Video Clip 1: Class discusses variables related to EiE parachute design activity
Students are participating in a large class discussion about the first question in Part 2 of Lesson 5. This question asks students to choose one of the variables related to the EiE parachute design activity and ask a testable question. The three variables are canopy material; canopy size; and length of suspension line. The students come up with the three questions: How does canopy material affect the speed of the parachute? How does canopy size affect the speed of the parachute? How does the length of the suspension line affect the speed of the parachute?
TL L5 Video Clip 2: Class discusses Practice 3 grade level expectations
Students participate in a large class discussion about the question about the grade level expectations related to Practice 3 that the children in the video engage in. The Next Gen PET students identify three expectations that the children participated in: evaluating methods of data collection; making predictions; and comparing two models.
TL L5 Video Clip 3: Class comments on whether they were surprised by children's discussions
This clip is a discussion continuing the discussion in Clip 2. In this video the instructor asks Next Gen PET students to compare the lesson in the video with their expectations for what 3rd graders are capable of by posing the question: "Were you surprised that 3rd graders can do such a sophisticated investigation and have a discussion?" The Next Gen PET students were not surprised that children have sophisticated discussions because they have similar experiences in their own practicum classrooms.
TL L5 Video Clip 4: Group discusses CQ 3-1 and reconsidering their ideas
This clip is of three students discussing the last question in Part 2 that asks them how they would modify the activity. They discuss the need to plan before actually conducting the experiment; for example by defining terms like air drag. They also suggest asking questions so that they can gauge where the class is in their understanding of the concepts. This step also highlights where students are struggling. Students proceed with sharing what they would do if they were the teacher in terms of process and sequence and focus. They also discuss what the lesson could look like in successive days by brainstorming different experiments of drag in water or atmosphere.
